Description:

In the far corner of the Carberry Woodlands stands Queen Mary’s Mount, where Mary, Queen of Scots and the Lord Bothwell in 1567 lost the battle (of nerves!) against the rebel lords (Lords of the Congregation).

Mary only surrendered when she knew Bothwell had managed to escape and was 'safe'.

There is a modest monument with inscription. It marks the spot where it is believed that Queen Mary mounted her horse to cross over to the Lords of the Congregation, having arranged for her lover Bothwell's safe passage back to Dunbar Castle. She was immediately arrested and taken to Edinburgh before being imprisoned in Lochleven Castle.
