Description:
Lochleven Castle is one of the most important medieval monuments in Scotland. Built in the 14th century, Loch Leven Castle was originally owned by the Douglas family, one of the most powerful families in Scotland. The Castle was strategically located on an island in the middle of the loch, which made it an ideal location for a fortress. The impressive curtain wall is said to have been built in 1300, making Lochleven one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland. Additionally, the castle’s tower house is also among the oldest in the country as it was most likely built in the early 1300s.
Mary, Queen of Scots and King Robert the Bruce stayed here as well.
Mary's last visit though was definitely not voluntary.....but that's another tale.
