Red Castle ***
Region: Aberdeen(shire) & Moray
Description:
The crumbling ruin of Red Castle stands on elevated ground overlooking Lunan Bay and dates from the 12th century. It is a grand location....but the sea is getting closer and closer. This castle could one day simply crash into the waves!
Originally built by King William (the Lion) of Scotland to defend against Viking invaders, all that remains of this once formidable fortified house is part of the 15th century rectangular tower and the curtain wall. There was a full Covenanters’ siege of the castle that lasted two years and ultimately led to its ruin. The castle never recovered and began its inevitable decline.
