Old Castle Lachlan **
Region: Argyll & The Isles
Description:
The original name of the castle was ´Castle Lochlainn´ and was the main seat of Clan Lochlainn, the oldest family of Cowall.
The ruined castle stands by a remote bay of Loch Fyne. The 15th chief of Clan Lachlan followed the call of Bonnie Prince Charlie and ´came out´ with 250 clansmen. After Culloden the estate was therefore forfeited.
His successor had different sympathies and because of his anti-Jacobite stance was re-granted the estate.
The castle incorporating parts of an earlier castle (12th century) has been garrisoned by Campbells in 1645 and because of the Campbells anti-Jacobite sentiments seized again in 1715 and 1745.
