Description:

When the MacIans of Ardnamurchan in around 1200 decided that they would need a castle to protect their interests in the region, a small rocky outcrop on the shore of Mingary Bay seemed the obvious choice. The castle was soon involved in a series of battles and conflicts, for example serving James IV in 1493 and 1495 as a base to help to suppress the MacDonald Lords of the Isles.

After a long period of restoration the castle has been turned into a luxury hotel and can no longer be visited other than by guests. Hence the reason why it is (for me) no longer a 3-star tourist attraction. The setting is great though!
