Description:

A very interesting and impressive castle. On this spot overlooking the Tay there must have stood a predecessor, as this castle originates from the later part of the 16th century and William Wallace took shelter in Elcho Castle in the late 13th century (!) The lands of Elcho were granted to the Wemyss family by James III in 1468 and Charles I made Sir John de Wemyss an Earl. This same Earl however later championed the parliamentarians and consequently faced James Graham, Marquis of Montrose over the barrel of a gun in the battle of Tippermuir.
