Corgarff Castle **
Region: Aberdeen(shire) & Moray
Description:
A striking white building in the lush Cairngorms countryside with a bloody and tragic history..
In 1571 Adam Gordon of Auchindoun laid siege to Corgarff. As Alexander Forbes was absent, his wife and the Forbes men at arms had to defend their home. The Gordons burned the castle and Lady Forbes and her household burned alive. The present tower dates from the period immediately afterwards. James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, stayed here in 1645 and in 1689 the Jacobites destroyed the castle. After the ´15 rising it were the Hanoverians who burned the castle to punish the Jacobite Earl of Mar. The castle remained a military outpost until 1830.
