Battle site of Culloden (1746) ***
Region: Inverness, Loch Ness & Nairn
Description:
The Battle of Culloden Moor in 1746 is considered “the beginning of the end for the Highlands”.
Here, on this most (in)famous of Scottish battlefields, the (almost) last battle on British soil was fought in 1746. The Duke of Cumberland (‘the butcher’), son of George I, had finally cornered Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobites.
In spite of the almost desperate highland charges the English cannon and musket fire made all the difference. Another major factor in this disaster was the boggy terrain which defused the effectiveness of the Highland charge.
The dream of a reborn Stewart monarchy finally ended (did it?). You can find out more about the events leading up to the Battle of Culloden Moor, and the massive changes it brought, at the award-winning visitor centre at Culloden, featuring interactive exhibitions that follow the battle’s characters through the historic events. The battlefield itself has also been restored to resemble the fateful day in April 1746.
