Invermark Castle *
Region: Perth(shire), Angus & Dundee
Description:
Invermark Castle was built around 1526 by the Lindsay family extending an existing 14th century tower.
A sign on the iron yett barring the original first floor entrance to the castle emphasises that admission is not possible, while the small trees growing from the roofline on the north side suggest that the stonework may not be as good as it looks from the outside.
The castle was used as refuge by David Lindsay in 1607, after he had killed Lord Spynie in Edinburgh after a long-standing quarrel. After the battle of Culloden James Carnegie, Lord Balnamoon was another who sought shelter in Invermark Castle hiding from government troops. By the start of the nineteenth century, the castle was in ruins
