Description:

This small but exquisite museum has found a niche in Castle Menzies. The museum is small, not because of a lack of dedication or enthousiasm. No, it has more to do with the clan's history of proscription. Their ancestral lands spanned across areas such as Perthshire, Stirlingshire, and Argyll, with their stronghold centered around the stunning region of Glen Orchy. After the clan battle of Glenfruin in 1603 (a decisive victory for the MacGregors!) King James VI was enraged. That in turn led to their persecution and outlawry and that is why there are not many items (yet!) to see. Having said that.....what there is is very interesting! Not only for Scotland fans but also for history buffs and.......probably for you as well!

Just for your information: some of the best MacGregor exhibits are in Inveraray Castle or in Sir Walter Scott's home in Abbotsford.

Collection(s):

  • 18th and 19th century basket hilted broadswords, one bearing the armorials of Clan Gregor ( possibly made for the 1822 visit of King George IV to Scotland ;
  • An early 19th century framed silhouette of a young lady ( believed to be the niece of Rob Roy );
  • A large punch or food bowl reputedly owned by Rob Roy;
  • A 17th century flintlock long gun.
