Description:

This abbey was established in 1150 and, like the other great Border abbeys, Dryburgh suffered greatly during the wars with England. The Reformation in the 16th century made matters worse. In later centuries much energy was spent into preservation of the ruins. The chapter house features paintwork that dates back to its construction and today boasts some of the best Gothic architecture in Scotland.

In 1832 Sir Walter Scott (See: Abbotsford House) was buried here.
