Description:

Melgund castle about a mile from Aberlemno was a roofless ruin until recently.  The castle is believed to have been built by Cardinal Beaton in the mid 16th century, for his favorite mistress Marion Ogilvy – to whom he may have been married in secret, before becoming a cardinal. It remained with the descendants of their son until the 17th century. Melgund passed to the Marquis of Huntly in the 17th century and then to the Elliots of Minto.
