Crathes Castle **
Region: Aberdeen(shire) & Moray
Description:
Crathes is a very fine tower house that definitely should find a place in your itinerary. The construction of Crathes started in 1553 and lasted for unknown reasons over 40 years (!).
The Burnards (Burnett) supported Robert the Bruce against his nemesis Edward I and managed to steer clear of the upheavals of the 17th and 18th century. Although the Trust now manages the estate, the owners are still....the Burnetts of Leys. A tour of the castle is a must for those who appreciate beautiful relics of ages past and...exquisite painted ceilings. By the way: the garden is a solid wow!
