Description:

This castle (with adjacent caravan park!) guards the mouth of the Loch. It is one of the earliest stone castles in western Scotland, built around 1100. A certain "Suibhne" is credited with building the castle. By the 13th century, MacSween lands extended as far as Lochawe in the north and Skipness in the south. The family chose however the wrong side in the Wars of Independence. Robert the Bruce displaced them and granted the castle to his loyal supporter, Angus Macdonald of Islay.
