Description:

Cardoness Castle, built as the fortified residence of the McCullochs, has a commanding elevated position overlooking the countryside near Gatehouse of Fleet. You cannot fail to see the castle when driving on the A75 between Dumfries and Stranraer.

The castle was a MacCulloch stronghold for over 200 years and was built in around 1475 by James MacCulloch. The name "Cardoness" appears to be the name of another ancient family which either owned the land before the MacCullochs owned it.
