Description:
There is not much left of this strategically sited castle on a hill between the River Tweed and River Teviot. The castle was built sometime in the 1120s by King David I and it changed hands more than 10 times over the next 450 years. The castle was razed by the Scots in 1460 after more than a century of English occupation. In 1547 the English converted the castle ruins into an artillery fort, but it reverted back to the Scots in 1551 and was demolished as part of a peace treaty between England and France.
